OpenLiteracy's virtual 1:1 reading tutoring is recognized for grades 1–5

OpenLiteracy, a provider of virtual 1:1 literacy tutoring for students in grades K–6, has been added to ProvenTutoring, the nation's only clearinghouse for research-proven tutoring models. ProvenTutoring is housed at the Johns Hopkins School of Education's Center for Research and Reform in Education and lists only programs with rigorous evidence of raising student achievement.

OpenLiteracy is listed for grades 1–5, the widest grade span of any one-to-one reading tutoring program in the network. It is the only one-to-one program in the network proven beyond grade 3, and the only program whose tutors are all certified teachers.

OpenLiteracy's listing is based on a Johns Hopkins randomized controlled trial of 853 students in 23 Oakland Unified School District elementary schools. Students offered OpenLiteracy tutoring made significantly greater gains in reading comprehension (effect size +0.11) than peers receiving the district's own in-person Tier 2 small-group reading intervention. The study also earned OpenLiteracy a Strong rating from Evidence for ESSA.

"We are so thrilled to be part of the Proven Tutoring family. We are in good company and hope to learn from the community of tutoring providers really trying to move the needle for kids. We are especially proud that we are approved for grades 1-5. Being able to support struggling readers across a wide grade span is important as districts think about their literacy intervention strategy,” said Sarah Scott Frank, PhD, founder and CEO of OpenLiteracy.

OpenLiteracy's ProvenTutoring profile is available at proventutoring.org/reading/openliteracy.
